Aaliyah died in a tragic plane crash in the Bahamas. She had travelled to the island nation in order to film a music video for her song, ‘Rock the Boat.’ However, when they completed production early, they opted to go home on a twin-engine plane rather than their scheduled flight.

However, the twin-engine plane was already carrying the equipment from the shoot. Shortly after takeoff, it crashed 200 feet from the runway, killing Aaliyah as well as the eight other people on board. It was later found that the plane was 700 pounds over its weight limit at the time of the crash.

At the time of her death, Aaliyah was dating Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records (alongside Jay Z). While they weren’t formally engaged at the time, Dash says that they had planned to get married and on a recent episode of ‘The Real,’ he opened up about her untimely death.
